Elevate Your Teaching: Insights from TWP’s Reading Proficiency Workshops!

In June 2024, I had the privilege of attending three dynamic TWP workshops on “Enhancing Reading Proficiency: A Workshop Tailored for High School English Teachers to Elevate Student Literacy.” These were held on June 8th at Ibis Style, Chiang Mai, June 15th at The Imperial Hotel, Korat, and June 22nd at The Hi Place, Roi Et, with around 300 passionate English teachers in attendance.

Here are the key takeaways that can transform our classrooms:

Thought-Provoking Questions: Ajarn David Persey, our excellent trainer, kicked off by asking, “Do we read more or less than before?” This sparked lively discussions among us, highlighting the evolving nature of reading in the digital age. We explored the significance of visual literacy, short messages, and the integration of multimedia in today’s reading habits.

Active vs. Passive Reading: Ajarn David led us into a deep dive on whether reading is an active or passive skill. The consensus? Reading is an active process, involving techniques like top-down, bottom-up, chunking, prediction, inferences, and leveraging background knowledge.

Importance of Reading Strategies: We discussed why students need robust reading strategies to handle university assignments, succeed in international exams, and efficiently process information. These skills are crucial for their academic and personal growth.

Four Components of Reading Fluency: Ajarn David emphasized the importance of accuracy, comprehension, speed, and expression in reading. He explained that reading fluency makes the experience more enjoyable, informative, and even addictive.

Varied Reading Techniques: We explored different types of reading—skimming, close reading, analyzing, evaluating, and reading for pleasure. Understanding when and why to use each technique is essential for effective teaching.

Metacognitive Reading Processes: Ajarn David summarized reading into three metacognitive stages:

Before Reading: Reflect on why we want to read.

While Reading: Monitor our understanding, re-read, or check the meaning of concepts.

After Reading: Verify our understanding through discussions with ourselves and others, sharing our thoughts and insights.

These workshops were a treasure trove of practical strategies and insights that I can’t wait to implement in my classroom. For those who missed these sessions, I highly recommend incorporating these approaches to enhance your teaching and elevate student literacy.
