Transforming English Teaching: Insights from TWP Workshops

In May 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to attend three TWP workshops focused on “Elevating English Teachers’ Skills: An Interactive Workshop on Improving Listening and Speaking Proficiency for Dynamic Communication in High School Classrooms.” These workshops took place at Avani Sukhumvit in Bangkok, The Siamese Pattaya in Chonburi, and Centara Ubon in Ubon Ratchathani, with around 300 English teachers participating.

Here are some key takeaways that can transform our classrooms:

Break the Routine: Traditional listening tasks often lack engagement. Instead of just saying, "Open your books to page 34," let's make our lessons more dynamic and interactive.

Engage with New Tips: Our trainer, Ajarn David Persey, introduced us to four essential tips:

Close Your Books: Encourage students to rely on their memories.

Use Your Memories: Make learning a personal challenge.

Ask Good Questions: Engage students with thought-provoking questions.

Personalize Learning: Make lessons relevant to students' lives.

Listening is about understanding and meaning, not just hearing.

The Importance of Listening: Ajarn David highlighted that listening is a crucial skill. We spend more time listening than speaking, reading, or writing. It’s vital for effective communication.

Addressing Listening Challenges: Students often struggle with listening tasks because they lack context, can’t control the speed, or don’t know the vocabulary. Understanding these challenges helps us create better learning experiences.

Design Engaging Activities: To help students truly learn and remember what they hear, we need to design activities that are interactive and memorable. This approach ensures students not only hear but also understand and retain the information.

These insights have profoundly impacted my teaching methods, and I’m excited to implement them in my classroom. I highly encourage fellow English teachers to consider these strategies to enhance student engagement and learning.
